The San Antonio region boasts several former Catholic missions, erected as early as the 17th century by Spanish forces. These missions served as hubs for monks and priests spreading Christianity to the indigenous population. While the Alamo garners fame, it is not part of the San Antonio Missions National Historical Park.

On the reverse of the 2019 5 oz ATB San Antonio Missions National Historical Park Silver Coins, a redesign of Spanish colonial reals depicts arches, bells, and a lion symbolizing Spanish heritage, with waves representing the San Antonio River and wheat signifying the area’s agricultural legacy.
