Design Details

The American Gold Buffalo coin takes its name from the reverse design, which depicts a powerful American Bison standing on a mound. This iconic image is inspired by the original design used on the 1913 Buffalo Nickel by James Earle Fraser.

The reverse includes the inscriptions “UNITED STATES OF AMERICA,” “E PLURIBUS UNUM,” and “IN GOD WE TRUST.” Also listed are the coin’s specifications: “$50,” “1 OZ .9999 FINE GOLD.”

On the obverse is the profile of a Native American chief, also designed by James Earle Fraser. The portrait is believed to be a composite of several Native American leaders, including Big Tree, Iron Tail, and Two Moons.
