Before 1965, many U.S. coins contained at least 90% silver. However, a decision made that year phased out silver from currency. Today, many collectors seek out these so-called “junk coins” for their silver content rather than their designs. Despite being labeled as such, these coins are highly valued for their silver content, and you can be assured that they are certified to contain 90% silver.
The obverse features a portrait of President Franklin D. Roosevelt, designed by John R. Sinnock, showing the president in profile facing left. This design was adopted shortly after Roosevelt’s death in 1945, but it has sparked some controversy. Some believed the initials “JS” at the base referred to Joseph Stalin rather than the artist. Additionally, there were claims that Sinnock’s design was based on a bust by African American artist Selma Burke, which Sinnock denied, stating he drew inspiration from his earlier work. The coin features the word “LIBERTY” above Roosevelt’s image, “IN GOD WE TRUST” on the lower left, and the year of minting below, which varies based on available stock.
On the reverse side, you’ll find a torch flanked by a sprig of olive and a sprig of oak. The words “UNITED STATES OF AMERICA” appear above, with “ONE DIME” below. The phrase “E PLURIBUS UNUM” is inscribed in the background.
