The American Silver Peace Dollar holds a special place not only as a means to own silver but also as an embodiment of one of America’s most captivating coin designs. In the early 20th century, a major transformation swept through American coinage. Prior to this era, the U.S. Mint had a tradition of using coin designs for extended periods without significant changes. The focus was on consistent, easily reproducible designs. However, this approach evolved in the early 1900s when design competitions were held to revamp all circulating denominations, giving rise to some of the nation’s most exquisite and iconic coins, including the stunning Peace Dollar minted from 1921 to 1935.
The existence of the Peace Dollar can be traced back to the Pittman Act of 1918. This legislation mandated the production of millions of Silver Dollars, a coin that hadn’t been minted since 1904. Initially, the U.S. Mint continued to produce Silver Dollars in 1921, utilizing the well-established Morgan design. However, the decision was made to create an entirely new motif. With World War I’s recent memory and the desire for a symbol of peace, the Mint chose this theme for the new Silver Dollar.
The Peace Dollar’s obverse presents a graceful portrayal of Liberty, her hair flowing, and a crown atop her head. Two design options were submitted for the reverse, both featuring an eagle. One version depicted the eagle clutching a sword, while the other grasped an olive branch. The latter design, symbolizing peace, was selected, and the word “PEACE” was placed below the eagle’s perch. This marked a departure from earlier American coinage, where eagles often held both arrows and olive branches simultaneously.
