The Texas Centennial half dollar was introduced in 1933 under President Franklin Delano Roosevelt to commemorate the centennial of Texas’s independence, honoring the sacrifices of its pioneers. The legislation permitted the minting of up to 1.5 million coins on behalf of the American Legion Texas Centennial Committee based in Austin.
The Battle of the Alamo, a defining moment in the Texas Revolution (February 23 – March 6, 1836), saw Mexican troops led by General Antonio López de Santa Anna besiege the Alamo Mission. The assault resulted in the loss of all Texian defenders, but it ignited a fierce resolve among Texans, leading to their ultimate victory at the Battle of San Jacinto on April 21, 1836, which effectively ended the revolution.
